A Look into Hunting as a Popular Rural Sport

Hunting is a popular rural sport as there are at least one million people in the United Kingdom that takes part in shooting activities - one form of hunting - every year, according to the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BACS). Typically, hunting seasons start from November and ends in mid-February, making the countryside an ideal place to visit for shooting enthusiasts.

In the UK, animals hunted during a shooting activity are typically birds, foxes and hares. In the past, this game enjoyed the pleasures of having no limitations and restrictions; however, government regulations to restrict the hunters' activities in one way or another are now in place. As an example, Scotland has banned the hunting of foxes in general since 2002. Also, Wales and England banned the use of hounds to hunt foxes since 2005, making it very difficult for hunters since the hounds play an integral role in the game.

Drag hunting typically takes the place of traditional fox hunting wherein an artificial scent is used on the grounds prior to the start of the event. The scent is the one picked up by the dogs but there are no real foxes involved. However, such an alternative activity requires more jumping than the traditional games, and is not suitable for children.
